What is MLM?

Multi-Level Marketing aka MLM is a marketing strategy in which the sales force is compensated not only for sales they generate, but also for the sales of the other salespeople that they recruit. This recruited sales force is referred to as the participant’s “downline”, and can provide multiple levels of compensation.

MLM a bad word?

MLM or Multi-Level Marketing has become a bad word to some; in fact, there is usually a “scheme” added to the end of that phrase to indicate disgust with the practice. However, home businesses or MLMs are not only successful but they emphasize the ability of individuals to take control of their own earnings. Do not let a few bad apples spoil the bunch; MLM can be a great way to start your own business and make it succeed!

There are several things that the MLM has going for it. First, it reduces the need for overhead that strangles so many start-up businesses. Most MLMs require relatively small initial investments when compared to the average business. Further, they offer the chance to build a downline of distributors quickly without hiring a huge sales force. What is not to like?
Unfortunately, there have been a few examples of illegal pyramid schemes, price-fixing and emphasis on recruitment that have given MLMs a bad name. However, there are plenty of good people involved in MLMs, and some have built a successful and legitimate business with them. Clearly, not all MLMs are “bad.”

The best thing about a good MLM is the support it offers. For those who are just venturing into the sales market, it can be overwhelming to work independently. Most MLMs offer great advice and assistance from those higher up who recruited you. Further, most of the companies take care of branding and marketing materials so all you have to do is sell.

Just like any sales job, MLMs are not all a bed of roses. Sometimes you have to work particularly hard and you have to be prepared for stretches when sales may not be as great as you hoped. However, the very infrastructure that defines MLMs makes those times easier to bear. An MLM may be the best way to get into sales and ultimately build a great business model!
